Statement of Solidarity

We humbly present ourselves to stand with you in this moment of grief. The world grieves the assassination of Berta by the U.S.-backed Honduran state working on behalf of capitalist interests. This was an attempt to rob us of a powerful leader and take Indigenous power but they have failed. Berta’s life and struggle reminds us that as long as we breathe, we will fight for the river’s freedom. The state’s theft of her life only serves to further commit us to the fight for decolonization and ignites our resistance to all oppression. Her body may have been taken from us but her spirit and her love is a part of all of us and reinforces our commitment to the rights of the earth and her people. Berta, as a mother, a daughter, an Indigenous woman, and a leader, will be remembered for her joyousness, her strength, and her courage.  The leadership of Indigenous women is our greatest hope for the survival of mother earth and for us all.

In light of this, we support COPINH’s call for international solidarity. We demand that the United States Congress and United States Embassy officials support a transparent international investigation into Berta’s murder. Given the United States government’s financial support of Honduran police and the Public Ministry, we demand that her assassins not be granted impunity.

We commit ourselves to take action to denounce the Honduran state, transnational corporations, privatization, and violations of the rights of the Lenca people. We reject the United States government for continuing to promote and enact violence in Honduras.

We humbly accompany you in your demands for an end to impunity, an end to paramilitary training and activity, and end to the persecution of those who defend the rights of indigenous peoples. We, too, re-affirm our commitment to life.

We will strive to model Berta’s example of humility, courage, strength and joyousness in this process. She lives on in our struggle.

We send our strength and our courage to flow over you just as the suns’ rays flow over the earth.

In the spirit resistance,
